brothers-in-law

Today was Audrey's funeral.  Now everyone's back at the house:  Her grown daughters Ann
and Cindy, their families, relatives, friends and acquaintances.

People joke that if Audrey's husband Lloyd were still alive, he would have gone downstairs by
now.  Lloyd had a room in the basement.  He went there a lot and he went there alone.

Ann and Cindy were never allowed in, even as adults, even in the two years since their father
died.  Audrey kept the room locked.

When the play begins, Cindy's slightly younger husband Richard, who planned the funeral
and acted as master of ceremonies, is sneaking downstairs to check out Lloyd's secret room.
Fred, Ann's slightly older truck driver husband, beat him to it.

Their wives are very close.  But despite countless birthdays, anniversaries and holiday
celebrations, this is the first time Fred and Richard are alone together.  And in the 12 years
they've been part of the same family, this is their first real conversation.
